Admissions

General Information

  • The admission deadline is April 15th; however, we will close applications when we reach enrollment capacity. We highly recommend applying early.
  • We use a “rolling admission” process in which applications are reviewed as they are received.
  • Applicants are informed of their enrollment status within a few weeks of their application.

Admissions Requirements

  • Must hold or be eligible for a teaching license.
  • Minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours.
  • Basic computer skills and equipment and a reliable internet connection.

Step 1: Prepare your Curriculum Vitae/Resume

  • Please include all relevant work, internship, and volunteer experience.
  • Include all education experience from formal institutions (provide degree, major, GPA, and years attended) and informal training (e.g., work or volunteer training, certificate programs, etc.).

Step 2: Statement of Purpose

  • Do not exceed two pages.
  • Describe evidence in your educational practice of your commitment to addressing equity/social justice issues and a desire to lead, focusing on eliminating inequities.
  • Describe evidence of your instructional excellence with a range of diverse learners.
  • Describe evidence of leadership excellence related to equity and diversity.
  • Describe anything else you would like us to know about why you would be an excellent candidate for this program.
  • If GPA is below 3.00: In the statement, explain why GPA does not accurately reflect your potential to serve in leadership roles.

Step 3: Request Letters of Recommendation

  • Three letters of recommendation are required.
  • When completing the online application, you will submit the names and emails of three individuals who are qualified to evaluate your academic and professional competence. We will reach out to them to submit the recommendation form.

Step 4: Complete the Online Application

  • Be sure to indicate that your application is for the summer term.
  • When applying to the Graduate School, you must select the correct program option in the Graduate School’s online application form. On the Application Information webpage of the form, select “Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis: Wisconsin Idea Principal Preparation, MS” in the first drop-down menu field.
  • Upload the Statement of Purpose online. Do NOT mail any paper copies of the application materials to the Graduate School.
  • Upload a CV/resume to the Graduate School application.

Step 5 Pay Your Application Fee

  • The Graduate School application fee is $75.
  • You can pay your application fee via credit card, wire transfer, or e-check.
  • The Graduate School offers a limited number of application fee grants to make sure that the application fee is not a barrier for students from our key recruiting initiatives. More info here. (external link)

Step 6: Upload Transcripts

Upon a recommendation for admission from the department, the Graduate School will prompt you to provide official transcripts. You do not need to provide official transcripts to the department.

  • International applicants, please follow these instructions to learn about previous degree (transcripts) and English proficiency requirements.

Tuition & Fees

Tuition

Tuition for the Wisconsin Idea Principal Preparation program courses is $800 per credit

Fees

Currently, there are not any additional fees charged to students.

Additional Costs

Students are responsible for purchasing required materials, such as textbooks, for their courses. Instructors will provide students with information regarding required materials upon enrollment.

Information about the different types of financial aid is available through the UW–Madison Office of Student Financial Aid.

Assistantships and Tuition Remission Eligibility

By university policy, students enrolled in the Wisconsin Idea Principal Preparation program are not permitted to accept teaching assistantships, project assistantships, research assistantships, or other appointments that would result in a tuition waiver.
